The Point

Oblio's Cap

Needle: size 9, dp. (circ’s would work, too)
Yarn: 2 skeins Lamb’s Pride Bulky, Mustard Yellow
Other accessories: blunt tapestry needle or crochet hook for hiding tails.
& some poly-fiber-fill for shaping.
Gauge: 11 st. = 3", 11 rows = 2"

Size: adult

CO 70 st. and divide onto your dp needles.
Rows 1-30: knit
Row 31 - begin decrease: *k12, ssk* repeat to end.
Rows 32-36: knit
Row 37: *k11, ssk* repeat to end.
Rows 38-42: knit
Row 43: *k10, ssk* repeat to end
Rows 44-48: knit

Continue decreasing in this manner, knitting one less stitch each decrease row (row 49: *k9, ssk.* row 55: *k8, ssk* etc.) and knitting five rows in between decreases, until you have 12 sts on your needles. (90 rows total)
Break yarn and pull through remaining sts.
Stuff cap with suitable amount of poly-fiber fill to get a correct fit and point.

For child’s size hat, try casting on only fifty st. (or any number divisible by 5) and working only 15-20 rows before starting the decrease.

To figure out what decrease to start at, divide your cast on number by five and subtract two.

Example: if you wanted a much smaller hat, say 40 st. you would start the decrease with *k6, ssk* whereas if you wanted a much bigger hat, say 100 st, you would start the decrease with *k18, ssk*

I’ve also wanted to knit another Oblio hat and try felting it!
Please post pictures of finished projects so that I can see how this pattern is working for other people and let me know how it comes out if you felt one, too!

Thanks, and Enjoy!
*and keep your eyes peeled for an upcoming pattern of Oblio's dog Arrow!
(might not actually happen until the end of the summer...? who knows)

Awesome.

I was actually thinking of designing an oblio hat, but I'm very glad that a pattern already exists :)

I've had Me and My Arrow stuck in my head all day!!

Cute hat! I want to make a couple for my husband and I for Halloween... we're being lawn gnomes! :) How long would I need my circular needles to be? I'm having trouble using my dpns and I think my circs are too long. Any suggestions?

how funny -- my husband posted the "goofin with the bees" quote under my facebook status (about my friend's delicious honey) and i didn't recognize it so i googled it. this page was the only result i got, and we have the exact same sheep yarn art hanging in our dining room. funny what you end up stumbling upon when wandering through the pointless forest.

just wanted to say.... that the first 30 rows sure look like they're in stockinette stitch, which is knit one row purl one row. the instructions listed say to knit every row, which would produce garter stitch. not to knit-pick (pun intended), but for newbies out there it might need to be clarified.
thanks for your beautiful pattern! I'm making up a pattern for an elf hat as I go right now, and I have looked at your blog post for inspiration! Keep on knittin'

Hey, Oblio's hat, how awesome is that?? Must make, thanks so much for the pattern...

Isis Divine, you are right about alternating knit and purl rows to make stockinette stitch when knitting back and forth rows, but when knitting in the round, you are always knitting the "right side" and therefore do not have to alternate.

This was my second knitting project when I started this journey all the way back in 2010. tonight 9 years later I came back to your pattern to knit it again for a friend of mine. Thank you so much for posting your pattern, the one I made back in the day is still my favourite warm winter hat!
